So today I hung out with my friend Brandon and we booted up that old computer again. I put the registered version of ZZT on the desktop and we played a game called Edible Vomit. The game is from 1999, and it's very ambitious for a ZZT game. The protagonist of the story is a drug addict in search of the best high he can get, but the world he interacts with is just a part of one of his current drug trips. The game itself is very visual and satisfying to play. This got me thinking... I wonder how satisfying it would be to make another attempt at building an advanced ZZT game? I'm not talking about just the base of the game, shooting tigers and clearing woods. I'm talking about a real story with interactive events and characters. RPG elements and the like. If you've never heard of ZZT, in short, it is an old game for MS-DOS with ASCII graphics and a built in editor. In the game, you are a smiley face that travels the 2D world, shooting other symbols and characters with your ammo. The game came with some pre-designed levels and stories, but the editor and simple programming language encouraged players to make their own creations with the game. Either that or a sample of my tabletop RPG, or a new idea entirely. What do you think of ZZT?
