Ahh..Final Fantasy XI. (That's 11 for all you numeral impaired folks out there.) It's an MMORPG (Massively Multiplayer Online RPG), which is basically a completely online game in which you play in the same world as many many others at the same time..in real time.
All nations were united to fight the big evil..then the evil left and after many years, the nations divided once again in subtle peace. Now the big evil dudads are back.
That's basically the background to the whole game, which is a lot more than any other MMORPG can stand up to. Games like EverQuest or Anarchy Online don't really have much a background at all. FFXI is one of the few, if no the first, MMO' to splice actual story into it's genre. Even though it's still played just about the same way, i.e. 'Go get me this' 'Kill this' 'Make that' kinda quests, there's still story to uncover and even somewhat of an ending/to-be-continued thing. But you wont be thinking about the story much, seeing as you'll be spending all your time trying to find your first pair of pants and then working on the fancy job system.
The job system....
It's FFXI's gimmick that seperates it from all the other games of it's kind..aside from having cute lil chocobos and moogles. Well the job system is easy to learn, long time to master. You start off with basic jobs to pick from..Warrior, Theif, White Mage, Black Mage, Red Mage and a few others. Some races are good for smashing stuff with swords or blasting stuff with magic, but any race can take up any job. After you hit level 30 with your character, you can do a special quest that will allow you to adopt a second job, or sub-job. What ya do with the sub-job is kinda like this...
Start off with main job (Theif)
Level (Theif) to maybe 20 or 30..whatever you want.
Switch main job to (Warrior) and take up (Theif) as sub-job.
When you pick a job as your sub-job..it's only half the level that it is when it was your main-job. So the (Theif) would only be 10 or 15. Since you might have not leveled (Warrior), that'll be level 1. You only get access to any skills (Theif) has at level 10 or 15 when it's your sub..but if you switch it back to your main..you'll have all the level 20 or 30 skills again.
Lots of people often pick Main/Sub jobs that compliment eachother..like BlackMage/Whitemage - which gives you lots more MP and you'll always be using magic stuff, so you don't really have to change equipment drastically.
The major thing about FFXI is partying though. If you never join a group/party..then your chances of making it big are very very very very very slim. Let's just say..you'll die a lot against everything. Heck..even if you are in a group, you'll be in serious trouble a lot anyway. This game is just plain hard...which is good.
